Dear Autumn Quarter Faculty,
Whether you are new to the GSB or have been here for many years, I want to warmly welcome you to the new academic year! The Teaching and Learning Hub is here to support your efforts in the classroom.
We have a couple of events coming up that I hope you’ll find interesting:
- Teaching with AI — A Guide for AI Use in Assignments (Sept 5 & 18) will help you incorporate AI into your assignments
- Teaching During an Election Season (Oct 16), facilitated by your colleagues David Dodson and Neil Malhotra, together with TLHub staff member Kirstin Haag, will provide you with actionable tips for managing your classroom during this year’s elections.
Scroll down for more details on both workshops. I hope you will join us, and I wish you a wonderful fall quarter.
Happy Fall,
Grace Lyo

Upcoming Events
- Sept 5 & 18: Teaching with AI — A Guide for AI Use in Assignments @ 2:00–3:30 pm PT. With AI’s disruption of learning environments, you may be grappling with how to guide students on acceptable AI use in coursework. In this online workshop, we will present a framework that will anchor on your assignment’s goals and help you guide your students to use AI as a learning partner. Bring an assignment from your course or use our sample assignment to apply the framework during the workshop. We recommend (but don’t require) that you test out your coursework in an AI tool, such as GSB-GPT, a secure generative AI chatbot for GSB faculty and staff, ahead of the workshop.

Reminders
Fall Quarter Canvas courses will be published on September 12.
Submit an assignment on your student’s behalf. Instructors and Course Admins (FAs) are now able to submit an assignment for a student in Canvas.
Canvas Discussions/Announcements redesign. Canvas Discussions and Announcements have a new look and feel and added functionality including @mentions, role labels, and a split screen view. More information can be found here.
Embedding video in Canvas. On September 12, the default video player in Canvas will be upgraded to a new version with a more modern UI, better performance, and enhanced security. All Canvas videos should update automatically. Please note there is a new interface when embedding videos in a GSB Canvas course. Just click the Embed button to use the default settings, which have not changed. Additional information is available on MyGSB. Contact TLHub with any questions or video issues.
Changes to Canvas Assign To features. You will notice that assigning due dates now appears in a new pane after clicking on the link to Assign Access at the bottom of the edit screen in Assignments and Quizzes. You can also assign a Module to specific students or sections.
Prepare to capture mid-quarter feedback from students. Collecting feedback is strongly encouraged as students regularly express appreciation for instructors who ask for and respond to feedback. Visit our website to learn more about how TLHub can help!
Plan to set aside time for course evaluations at the end of the quarter. One of the simplest ways to ensure you get good and actionable course feedback is to carve out class time for students to complete their evaluations. We recommend you consider setting this time aside now so that you will be prepared at the end of the quarter. Reach out to us if you’d like a consultation on ways to capture course evaluations.
