“I think the use of people's preferred names, and taking the extra effort to learn how to pronounce them, is so important. I spend time practicing. I also approach students, even if I have to do so during the first three or four classes, and ask them to please repeat their name so I can get it right in class. I think that's perfectly human and perfectly acceptable, and it means so much to students when you can remember and pronounce their names correctly.”
