The course materials you select and teaching methods you use can create an inclusive learning environment that promotes learning for all students. Part of this workshop will include a discussion of features that make courses welcoming and equitable. Your course planning should also include anticipating and being prepared to handle sensitive issues around diversity, politics, and other topics that may reach your classroom – particularly in the current climate and upcoming election season. Managing these moments can feel uncomfortable or like they distract from your content. This workshop will provide opportunities to collaboratively troubleshoot potential challenges and will share data on what works in GSB classrooms.

Attendees are asked to spend 10 minutes reading pre-meeting materials in advance so that we can spend most of the session discussing strategies and troubleshooting challenges in small groups. The materials are:

• The ‘Foster an equitable and inclusive learning experience’ section under Big Course Planning in our Playbook for Teaching in 20/21. (Also available as a standalone PDF).
• The ‘Handling Planned or Unexpected Class Discussions Involving Sensitive Topics’ resource.

Because we will aim to create a safe space for open conversation, this session will not be recorded.

This session is open to faculty and lecturers teaching in Autumn Quarter and new-to-GSB faculty and lecturers.
